Finally finished my first build

Postby jack lee » Fri Aug 13, 2010 4:33 pm

I haven't been on the forum since June, but I finally finished my Piper Cub (first build).

Here's the last photo from my last post in June.

With primer

I guess I used the wrong paint. It wouldn't cover the primer, it seemed to mix with it instead: I got a yellow green I didn't want.

I finished it with rust-oleum enamel. It left some blisters on the top of the wings that don't show in the photos. I decided it was finished though.

Was not the paint, it was the primer that was wrong.

But, it turned out very nice indeed though!

Thanks, fellas, for your encouraging comments. It took two months and was very enjoyable to build. I've started the Stearman PT-17 and I like it a lot. It will probably take even longer than the Piper Cub.

Here's the start:

I'm looking forward to the Stearman build. I have one still in its box on the shelf.

My plane is supposed to fly but doesn't.
Balances out doesn't it : )

A bi-wing for a 2nd build...may present challenges in properly locating both wings. Go slowly in this respect and look for advice here.....Luck

First Build was a success!

Postby lukebozek1 » Sun Aug 15, 2010 10:57 am

Looks great! I just picked this kit up last week along with another cub kit that will be less than half the size from Peck Polymers. I had a bad experience with some of these "Automotive Sprays" but you used the Top-Flite stuff which I heard was really good. Maybe it was the primer? But keep up the good work, it finished up really well and looks great!

This was a great experience builder for me. First off I used the wrong glue on the scale prop and turned it into goo. So, this lead me to carve my first prop from balsa which turned out great. Staining and varnishmade it look so good that I replaced all the cabane struts with stained and varnished balsa also. The only stymy I had was the detail on the top wing cutout which has 2 handholds and a couple of fuel level sight tubes on the real plane. Don't let the top wing scare you, if you build every thing to plan it fits perfectly, just make sure the slots for the cabane struts fit nice and your home free.

Thanks, everyone!
I work very slowly, but I'll post more pictures and some questions as the model develops.
