Guillow's Avenger

Postby phil64 » Thu Jan 08, 2015 9:33 am

I just built this Avenger and I like the way it came out but the wing is mounted too low and i have questions about how it should be mounted.Unlike the Stuka kit i made as a kid in '76 ,which had a curved lower fuselage to accept the wing structure this Avenger does not have that.I ended up cutting away the lower bulkheads, mounted the wing structure where I thought it should go,then making 1/4 bulkheads to restore the belly of the plane.Any tips on a future build? Welcome Phil,

Looks like your did a good job on the model. And, yes I agree the wing looks a bit low. I do not build the 500 series much and do not have the plans, so I am afraid I can not offer any help on this.

Keep up the good work. Mitch

Thanks for the reply.I used Microlite covering material that you apply with a sealing iron.

That's really odd that you have to make that kind of modification. I'll check around and see what I can find out about the 500 series Avenger.
By the way, looks like you are a prolific modeler judging from that picture. 8)

I think i see my mistake.I guess you have to slide the wing unit through the fuselage.Cuts to the sides must be made to accommodate the wing structure.

Yes, apparently at some point you remove part of the formers. I think it's B3 and B4. Check out the build thread on this forum:

P.S. I think that's a wee bit more than a dabble in model ship building. 8)

I'll try and post a pic of my Avenger fuse if you are interested. It's not covered yet. At least not completely. I like your paint scheme. The Avenger is a mid wing plane.

/The 500 series Avenger is a "slide thru" model. Rather than a wing saddle you build up the fuse, then cut out the portion of the formers shown on the plan...

This is a 40 inch blow up of the 500 series plan:

Image

When I blow these things up, I use thicker balsa than you'll find in the 500 kit, so I cut the formers BEFORE assembly. When you build the 16" plane, you can cut em after you put it together. I use little surgical scissors...

When we build em really big, (this is the 500 series F6F plan blown to 10 foot...) We build the belly as a separate part, (foreground...)

Here are pics of my Avenger fuse. I will remove covering and recover. Anyway as stated, the wing slide through the fuse and you can see the cut away formers.
