After a three week of downtime, the profile P-40 and Yak 15 went flying and did rather well.

Beginning in 1949 and continuing thru the 1950s, Guillows produced a line of all sheet rubber powered FF rubber powered models. These were similar to the Comet struct-o-speed, Top Flite Jig-time, and other sheet wood models of this type.

There were fifteen models in this series. They were all about 12 inches in wingspan.

On page one of this thread we have some pics of profile sheetwood F-89 that was built and flown on a tether line. Even though it was a tiny model of 8 inch wingspan, it flew very well.

A while back one of the elevators of the profile P-40 was broken off in a collision. It was repaired and the P-40 was ready to fly again.

So we took it out for a test flight.

The weather was great for flying, so we took advantage of it before the weekend rains moved in. First we flew the 'tiny swinger'. At 8 1/4 inches, it is one of our smallest tether control models. The wing of this little model also serves as the tail for the Javelin and Lancer on occasion.

This brings us to the story of 'Boom-Boom'.

Early 2009, we scratch built a small tether controlled model based on a sheet wood Jetex 50 powered FF model named the Boom-Boom. We retained the twin booms but altered the nose profile and used a paper covered wing and horizontal tail.

It proved to good flying model. Stable and fast it could handle breezy weather well.

The fast flying often resulted in a broken boom during a collision.

After a number of breaks in the booms, it was decided to replace them with a single boom and a V-tail.

After a while, it was decided to revise the fuselage and change to a conventional tail.

This new arrangement also flew well.

The horizontal tail of the twin boom version was enlarged and a fuselage and tail was built for it. The Boom-Boom now became two models.

The original B-B fuselage was modified and remains in our fleet of swingers. The pictured collection of parts yields a variety of small flyable combinations and the tiny wing serves as a tail for some of the 'build-by-number' series models.

An interesting combination that is a good flying model even on a combined pole/line length 0f 30 feet is the 8 inch wing on the modified original B-B fuselage.

In this configuration the CG is at the back of the leading edge. The swing line is attached a little to the rear of CG. In our experience this location gives the best flight performance. In test tosses over the lawn, the model has steep fast glide, probably due to the high wing loading. But on the end of the tether line it flies remarkably well.

A couple of advantages of these little fliers is shown here. The handy storage container is a cut down 2 liter soda bottle. The one shown here contains most of the components of 5 of these little fliers. Beneath the soda bottle is the building board for these little guys. A household bulletin board from the school/home office department of the local discount store. The board is about 11 by 15 inches, made from a thin layer of cork bonded to about 3/8 of celotex type material backed with a layer of brown paper. When we bought them, they cost about 2 or 3 dollars. We haven't noticed lately if they are still in the stores.

On April 1,the Small Flying Arts forum had a 'quick build cookup'. The goal was to build a model in 24 hours. We decided to try to build a modified Guillows Wakefield Jr for the cookup.

First we made up some templates from card stock and cut out the basic parts.

Some of the mods were to shorten the fuselage height, convert the model from rubber power to tether control, and to make the wing and horizontal tail removable. Also the wing and tail mounts are compatible with the other 12 inch or less wingspan models in our tether control fleet.

This is the model at the end of the 24 hour build period. All that is needed at this point is nose ballast to get the CG in its proper location and a loop of line on the wingtip to connect to the tether line.

With all of the modifications, we've decided to name this little model the 'wakester'. Here is the model ready for its test flight.

Thanks to the kindness of Bill Parker we received a neat addition to our collection of Guillows sheet-wood display model kits. It is a model of the Boeing B-29. Bill has posted pictures of this kit at.

The kit is from the series of shelf models that sold for 25 cents in the early 1950s. Below is a picture of the box top of the P-40 in that series.
