Phugoid. Just wanted to let you know that I am thoroughly enjoying and learning from your build. I especially appreciate your detailed tips that someone new to building would only learn the hard way. To keep your build thread clean I have been copying into Word and editing out the unrelated comments. I have to say that I do enjoy reading the other comments, but I want to keep a clean copy of your build as a tutorial. I know this project is time consuming for you to take the pictures and think through the narrative but thank you very much for taking that time to promote the hobby.

Yes, where are the pictures?

I am to the point of boxing up the fuse, It looks very difficult to get it all square and if you build to plans don't you end up with a "flat sided" fuse?

Thanks Sawingman, I really appreciate the comments. Most of the tips come from me learning the hardway and making many mistakes!

Makmov, the fuselage is pretty "slab sided" but does round off a bit at the front. If you can hold those horses just for a bit, I'll show you a neat way to get the curve in the front without using the "rubber bands" as described in the plan........

As Sawingman says this build is very slow for me, as I have to take the pictures, think of things to point out to do, as well as things that could go wrong, and how to describe what I'm doing to be clear - it does take me a while!

Plus as I said, Mrs Phugoid is out of the country, so I have to entertain, clear up after,feed and wash a 3 year old and a 6 year old....

None of the fuse box is glued up yet. The sides are done I am just not sure the best way to proceed from here. Looks like you can easily out smart yourself though.

And yeah, I am not in any sorta hurry. I got plenty of projects to work on.

Hi Guys...Happy Thanksgiving,

Just got off my ship yesterday, I will be home for a month or so and will build a 180 with you guys. I built 4 models while aboard and brought a newbie (24yo) into our hobby. We each built the "Arrow" at the same time. I answered his questions and his plane came out fine. He in turn will plan to introduce his nephew into our hobby! I am always learning something new as I have been in and out of this hobby over the years. I have some finishing touches to put on my last model, and need to buy the 180, but I will put that to the front of my list.

So I will join in soon.

One thing I have been doing, and I do not see people doing this is... that is I sand down the sheet balsa on the back side as the plans say, but I also sand down the printed side. I figure this lightens the wood, and as I use the pieces I sand them more to remove all print.

I use a light weight colored paper with 2 coats of thinned clear dope, and I don't want to read all those reference numbers on my model.

You can't really see the printing unless it is directly behind the tissue (like on the fin etc).

I tend to be careful sanding the parts too tin, too early especially on the kits that 1/20" wood, it's already pretty thin, so it's wise not to get carried away. You are obviously OK with kits that use the 1/16" die cut parts.....
