Flew my Guillows Hawker Hurricane today

Postby scigs30 » Thu Oct 22, 2009 1:56 pm

I flew my Guillows Hawker Hurricane today and also the Comet SBD-3 Dauntless. The Hawker Hurricane is build per the plans and covered with domestic tissue. I posted the build thread on the board. Took some work to get her trimmed and she flew real fast making it tough to get a good picture. I was only able to get in one flight before the wind picked up.

WOW!!!

What props are those? Does not look like the Guillow's 5 inch one.

Those are 6 inch Peck Polymer props. I know most people don't like Guillows props but I don't have any issues with them other than the ones in the kits are too small. Here is something interesting. The older 300 series kits used to comet with 6 inch props, now they come with 5 inch. Guillows sells 6 inch props on there website, don't know why they just don't throw them in the kit.

Great pictures! I tried to take a lot of flying pictures thru the out summer
with a standard 35mm. I posted a few on virtual aerodrome, most of them turned out poorly. You have to be fairly close to get a good picture.

I have a zoom lens on my Nikon, what you don't see is the 10 shots that are wasted. These little Guillow birds are tough to take pictures of since they fly so fast. The 300 series was much easier since it is a slow flier.

I've given up on my digital cameras for in-flight shots. My Nikon Ftn with a 28mm to 120mm zoom lens or a 200mm telephoto and 400 speed film is the only way to go.

For indoor models, especially the transparent film covered ones, the digital cameras are absolutely useless. They can't focus fast enough, the shutter delay is maddening, and the built in flash, on the cameras I have tried, is not powerful enough. The Nikon, with a Vivatar strobe that has a telephoto setting, and 800 speed film works beautifully.
