Scratch build : #905 Mustang

Postby Sai1704 » Thu Sep 19, 2013 4:19 am

So, as you all know, I have built a mustang in the past but it doesn't fly. So I'm planning on building another using the plans I have. I have already drawn out the templates, and I am going to build it with 1mm / 3/64" balsa ( this weekend? ).

Hi Anirudh

Excellent build thread you got here. I am very interested and will be following this build very closely. I hope you post plenty of pictures. If I remember correctly you built your original Mustang with kit wood. If possible could you measure the wood your are now using and punch the numbers into this calculator. http://www.nclra.org/Programs/BalsaDensity.php and post the results?

I made a solid spinner by cementing several discs together and sanding it down. I plan to attach the propeller by drilling holes on either side.

Not a great job :?

I have purchased the balsa sheets, they are 1.5 mm in thickness. So the dimensions are 48"x4"x9/128"
Sheet 1 weighs 33.5 g, inconsistent grain but rigid, density: 11.26 lb/f^3.
Sheet 2 weighs 28.3 g, fairly consistent graing, but not so rigid, density: 9.51lb/f^3.
Certainly not contest grade wood. But I believe it is good enough for flying
Build process to start in... 12 hrs :)

I've begun cutting out the parts. i started with the fuselage sides, and together they weigh 10 g! Are there any techniques to cut holes in order to lighten them?

All parts cut and finished over the last two days.

3 rd picture. The side view of the fuselage. Do you have a former in the wrong position?

If you mean the 3rd one on top (E), I believe I cut the notches too deep. No problem about the "off-scale" look, it'll add a nice touch :D

Actually it looks like you may have the former in upside down. That definitely is not a notching issue. But if you are OK with it then that's all that matters.

Actually looking at it again, it looks like you have it seated way too low not that it is upside down. This is gonna drive me nuts!

Good progress on your build.
I'll be curious to know the final weight in comparison to my Guillow Mustang.

Wildpig, as of now, frames weigh exactly 14 g. All other parts(canopy, thrust button, rubber motor, etc) weigh 8 g. Hoping to get it under 28 g.
