Guillows Kit 903 Chipmunk Build

Postby regular guy » Fri Feb 16, 2018 12:20 pm

Kit is on it's way to us.

Also getting a Kit 503 Hellcat for the booklet. It looks harder to build than the Chipmunk.

The Chipmunk is a sheet balsa model and it looks simpler to build than the 'paper umbrella' type.

Pretty excited about the little Chipmunk kit!

Note:Just noticed the other day Guillows 900 say 'Indoor flyers' so they sound like place to start.

Anybody have some tips on gluing the tail of these sheet balsa kits?

Do you just glue the first 1/8" with really strong glue?

I ask because after that you spread two halves apart and stick formers in.

Seems like it would put a lot of load on the glue joint in tail.

I used Elmer’s white glue on my Skyraider and it held just fine. 1/16” to 1/8” should work just fine for gluing your fuselage sides together at the tail. I would not go more than 1/8” wide strip of glue. Make sure both halves are the same dimensions. Sand the profile as needed. Put a thin layer of glue on both halves not more than an 1/8” wide. Let this almost dry. Repeat and put parts together making sure they are perfectly aligned in all directions. Pin down and let dry for a day. It worked for me.

The miniature Scuncii hair clips make good clamps for model work.

They would work fine at the back of the sheet fuselage.

Thank you for all the tips!

Chipmunk and Hellcat were delivered today.

Looking through them sent me scurrying back to Goldwing kit which we already have.

Starting a build post for Goldwing build.

So people can find it searching Goldwing instead of continuing on with Goldwing in this Chipmunk post.

Opened up the box and took a look at everything.

Will save my questions for we're preparing to actually build it.

It's interesting.That's for sure.

Convinced me starting out with the Goldwing/Trainer is the right thing to do.
