2015 "G" Challenge

Postby kittyfritters » Thu Jan 01, 2015 4:27 pm

Here are some photos of the 2014 "G" Challenge winners.

The overall winner was David Scigliano with a Lancer. He got and 83.33 appearance score, and a great 136 flight score for a total of 219.33 points.

The appearance winner was Dennis Hurlbert with a Fly boy. His appearance score was 90.66 with a flight score of 108 for a 198.66 total and third over all.

The one you have to see is Orv Olm's entry. He only got a 3 second test glide out of it before the deadline and was fourth over all in the appearance competition. But, if there had been a charisma prize, this would have won it!

OK, last year we saw what can be done with the simple fliers. This year we have a real challenge

2015 Guillows "G" Challenge Rules

"Sixteen and Twenty-four Challenge"

Here are the rules for the 2015 Guillows "G" Challenge

-------------------------------------------
1. Eligibility:

a. The "G" Challenge is open to anyone in the world.

c. You must have a Yahoo ID and join the Yahoo "G" Challenge group.

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/guillows_g_challenge/info

connection with Paul K. Guillow, Inc.

b. A Guillow's kit prize will be awarded to each first prize winner

c. You may enter more than one model.

d. All models will be judged for appearance. A rubber powered model is considered for the Overall
prize simply by posting a flying time for it in the entry database. Electric Free-Flight and R/C conversions must post a video of at least a one minute flight.

3. Eligible models:

a: The 2015 Challenge is for any Guillow's 1:16 scale or 1:24 scale kit.

4. Structure:

a. The model must be built with the kit wood and plastic parts from the kit.

b. The nose of the model may be modified to make the thrust line more

c. Dethermalizers of the pop tail, speed brake, or spoiler types may be added to rubber powered prevent flyaways. (See Notes)

5. Propellers and Power:

a. Rubber or electric power only.

b. Any suitable propeller, shaft and thrust button may be used for rubber power.

c. AMA safety rules apply. No metal propellers.

6. Time Limits:

b. An album, 2015 Challenge Entries, will be set up for posting pictures.

c. Post a 3/4 front view and 3/4 rear view jpeg image of the model, clearly identified with your name. The images should have at least 720 X 480 resolution with 1024 X 768 desirable. Note: Yahoo will reduce the resolution of any larger image to about 800 X 680 on upload.

d. Do not post anything but your entry photos in the 2015 Challenge Entries album. Create a personal album for progress pictures.

e. A database, 2015 Challenge Entries will be set up for the flight times and short comments about model. After you post your pictures make an entry in the database.

f. Electric Free-Flight and R/C conversion modelers must post a link to a video in a message in the Conversations section of the group. The video must show a flight of at least one minute duration.

e. Ten additional appearance points will be added to the score for any model if it is a model of a specific, real airplane. To qualify for the additional points a photo or detail drawing (from an internet source) must be posted in the 2015 Challenge Entries album along with the photos of the model.

8. Judging:

a: Appearance judging will be on the basis of 100 possible points for appearance.

b. The flying points for rubber powered models are awarded on the basis of the best three flights made by the model before the Challenge deadline. The time of each flight is entered in the database and the points per flight are awarded as follows.

20 to 40 seconds.......each second = one point.
41 to 94 seconds.......each second = one half point.
Over 94 seconds...no additional points...bragging rights.

Maximum possible flying points = 201 (3 flight total).

c. The staff at Guillow has kindly volunteered to do the appearance judging from the posted photographs. Their scores are final.

d. When all the appearance point scores have been received by the moderator the results will be posted in a database, 2014 Challenge Results.

e. The Electric Free-Flight and R/C Conversion prize is a separate appearance competition. We already know they can fly! Any Electric Free-Flight or R/C conversion model without a posted video proving flight will be judged in the regular appearance judging.

-----------------------------------------------
Notes:

- If you use a fuse operated dethermalizer, please, make sure that it
meets the fire code in your flying area.

As Comet is now owned by Guillows, do their comparable kits qualify for the contest?

Chris,

No, only current Guillow's production kits. Sorry!

Great, I wanted to enter last year but did not finish my models... 1/16 scale I can do:

This model is already disqualified:

I already built this model, and the tail is bent balsa NOT Guillow parts.

You can expect to see more 400 series coming out of my work shop this year!

Mitch

UPDATE: Question for the challenge. I plan to build some 400 series. I will use all Guillow parts, but my question is this. Can I delete parts that I feel are not necessary for rubber power... for example: Can I drop half the wing ribs for weight reduction? I also plan to remove as much 'excess' wood as possible.

Hello to any G Challengers?

I just made repairs to my models (lost mg's and cannons) and was going to post on the G challenge. I went to the link, but it said it was not available. I thought the ending was Nov. 15th?

Can someone tell me how to post my pictures there?

I wanted to enter my 400 series FW and 1000 series Hellcat.

Don't know what's wrong, Mitch. I just checked on the group and had no trouble getting in. Post your 3/4 front and 3/4 rear views in the 2015 Challenge Entry album and make an entry for yourself in the database.

Thanks Howard... I needed to log in... I am still not sure how to post pictures but I will figure it out before the deadline. My computer skills are limited...

Mitch

Okay...I think I did it...by accident I posted some pictures twice. I included front, side and 3/4 view. I entered the database for my best 3 flight times for each model. I am sorry I did not finish the P-38, but that double engine has got me concerned... but I'll get her done and at least get her gliding in the Springtime! :D

Okay Guillow Builders,

I posted these 2 flying models in the Challenge...

Red 13 and White 13:

You can see more photos and info there. I replaced the lost wing guns on the FW and 1 on the Hellcat. I do not plan to repair the torn paper on the FW. Both models need a bit more to finish them up but that will come latter.
