Guillow's Spitfire 400 series

Postby comanche163 » Sun Dec 21, 2014 10:37 pm

I started this kit with my son last march. We stopped working on it about the beginning of the summer, and now just got back into it. He's just 9, but I thought this would be a fun project to do together and teach him patients. We decided we were not going to fly it, so we covered it with wood and wood filler. Lots of sanding!

Anyhow, we are close to done. Still have a lot of small deatails to work out, but we are happy with how its coming out. We are coing to hang it from his ceiling once its done.

This is my first guillows kit since I was about 15 years old, Im now 50, so its been a a lot of fun to re-live those days again.

Greetings Rob. VERY nicely done. :!: 8) Love the camo paint job. :) I think that some day I'll build myself a Guillow's war bird and try a camo paint scheme too.

Guillow's kits are #1 in my book. 8) Keep building ... and show us more. :)

Looks nice. I got the same kit. But its older(not laser cut). I really like the infilled/ spackled look of your plane.

Thanks for the nice comments. We based the camo pattern on a Spitfire from a PC game called "Cliffs of Dover" (seem below) it was easy to view the plane in 3d and see it from all angles. Pictures off the internet did not allow me to do that. We use almost an entire tub of wood putty, filling in gaps and sanding it down. The model is way to heavy to fly at this point, but we built it only for display anyway.

I got the pilot figure from my local hobby store as well as the prop. Its for an RC plane, I just rounded off the ends of the blades with sandpaper, since they were originally Square.

The antenna behind the cockpit, is just a placeholder right now, The last thing we will do it add that and some wires for the radio antenna's.
We still have to finish the bottom of the right wing and add some more weathering effects, touch up some paint areas and add a the air scoops to the bottom of the wings. We built it with the gear up since it will be hung from the ceiling. Originally, I made it so the gear could be retracted, but this proved to be very time consuming and will probably not do this for the other side.

Its been an awesome experience sharing this with him. It got us talking about flying, planes, aerodynamics and even WW2. We discussed the battle of Britain, the events that led to WW2 and what role the Spitfire played in all that. It got him very interested in History. What every I spent on this kit, it was well worth every penny!
