Vintage Guillows Sopwith Camel Build

I found this little gem on Ebay and it was already started. It is old and built per the plans so I will finish it as such. These were great little kits even though the wood was on the heavy side. Will cover with the vintage tissue and decals.

is that an older kit? it is not the 800 series is it ? it looks super !!

I don't know how old the kit is but the box has a price of 1.29 cents.

I am posting some of the eBay pictures, the previous builder did a pretty good job even with the heavy die crushed wood. I used the old kit domestic and I must same I am impressed. The tissue was a little on the stiff side but has excellent wet strength and shrinks real tight. This stuff is almost as good as Esaki and definitely better than todays domestic tissue. I am off for 72 hours and hope to get the decals on tonight and finish the build when I get home.

Fantastic covering job; she looks gorgeous!

How do you deal with the seams between the various tissue pieces? Try as I might, I've never been able to make mine disappear like you have on this model; any tips?

That is a nice covering job. R you using Dope, or glue stick to attach tissue, and are you applying it wet or dry? I discovered (due to impatience) thay you can get more shrinkage using a blow drier on the wet tissue.

I finished the Sopwith Camel using the kit decals. This was fun but I would rather build my own with lighter parts. This plane as shown comes in at 43 grams...ouch. She glides pretty fast and the front wing strut broke off on landing. Also I had to adjust the incidence of the stab and maybe I will find a field with tall grass and give her a try on some rubber and a larger prop.

I BELIEVE YOUR WGT. IS FINE. BI PLANES SHOULD DO WELL ON RUBBER, RIGHT?, LIKE i SAID I'M NEW TO FF, BUT ITR WOULD MAKE SENSE WITH TWO WINGS YOU GET MORE LIFT, AND ALSO CAN FLY UNDER LESS POWER. I'M ASSUMING , BUT 43G ON A BIPLANE ( i KNOW THIS MUCH, THAT'S DAMN GOOD.

Actually David, biplanes normally require more rubber because of the added drag of struts and wires. Scigs usually is very good at trimming for rubber power so if it's going to fly on rubber he can do it. The lighter the better though. Good luck Scigs.

I believe that's the old 100 series kit,that Guillow is considering re-releasing,along with others.I certainly hope they do.
